Our Integrated Model Keeps Your Mouth Healthy and Your Overall Health Optimized

Dentist in Mc Farland, WI

Our teeth play an important role in our everyday lives. They help us break down food so we can digest our meals properly. They're essential for clear communication, allowing us to articulate sounds and form words effectively. Visually, they shape our smiles, influence our expressions, and impact our interactions with others. Beyond these functions, our teeth also have a significant effect on our overall health.

There's a lot to discuss when it comes to prioritizing our health, yet one crucial aspect often overlooked is dental care. Many people don't realize that a cavity can have repercussions that go far beyond the mouth. In fact, oral health and overall well-being are more intertwined than you might imagine.

Issues with oral health can contribute to a range of serious conditions, including heart disease and diabetes. Despite the increasing research highlighting this connection, dental care frequently operates in isolation from the broader healthcare system. Prime Health Dental bridges that gap with integrated dental services, providing

Happy Mouth, Happy Body

A smile is a simple gesture that carries immense power. It's a natural part of being human-a universal way to express happiness, greet others, and show that we're friendly. Smiles convey our emotions and are excellent for breaking the ice or diffusing awkward moments. A warm smile can make a huge difference, but if you're like most people, it might not always be perfect, and that's perfectly fine. But is it good for your health?

According to studies from the CDC, one in four U.S. adults aged 20 to 64 has cavities. Even more startling is the fact that approximately 34 million school hours are lost each year due to emergency dental visits. For kids, missing school can mean the difference between advancing in their studies or falling behind.

If you're among those who feel self-conscious about their teeth, need preventive care, or are dealing with more serious problems like tooth decay, it's essential to prioritize the health of your teeth and gums. Fortunately, at Prime Health Dental, your dentist in Mc Farland, WI offers traditional dental services infused with medical insights that you can use to enhance your overall health.

Understanding the Connection Between Inflammation, Heart Concerns, and Gum Disease

Gum disease and gingivitis can cause inflammation to occur in your body, driving your immune system to target external microorganisms and irritants for healing. When this inflammation becomes chronic, it may negatively impact other areas of your health.

A study in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine has shown a connection between gum disease and heart problems, potentially leading to serious events like strokes or heart attacks, with inflammation suspected as a key factor. Furthermore, inflammation can contribute to artery hardening, reducing blood flow to the heart and elevating cardiovascular disease risk. Lifestyle factors such as smoking and poor diet, along with high cholesterol, can further increase the likelihood of heart attack or stroke.

As both the scientific and medical communities begin to take inflammation seriously, we're discovering that gum disease can contribute to heart problems through these pathways:

Bacteria in Your Blood

Some might dismiss this situation as a mere coincidence or attribute it to careless lifestyle habits. However, research indicates that Streptococcus sanguis-a type of bacteria linked to gum disease-can make its way to your heart, potentially setting the stage for a stroke. These bacteria may also be found in fat deposits in individuals with atherosclerosis. Notably, those who do not suffer from gum disease are less likely to have these bacteria in their hearts.

The Composition of Your Mouth

Blood vessels are abundant in your gum tissue. Your mouth also hosts its own unique microbiome, but factors like gum disease or certain lifestyle choices can throw this balance off. This connection means that bacteria can easily enter your bloodstream through your gums, particularly when the tissue becomes inflamed or irritated.

Treatment Tips from Prime Health Dental

While we're still waiting for definitive evidence that proves how flossing and brushing can lower the risk of heart disease, great oral care is still very important. To that point, your dentist in Mc Farland, WI from Prime Health Dental will provide you with tips to reduce inflammation from the source. Some of that advice may include:

  • Schedule dental checkups twice a year to have plaque removed and your teeth examined and thoroughly cleaned.
  • Brush your teeth twice a day at a minimum. Floss at least once a day. Brush your teeth for at least two minutes per session. Try to use toothpaste from a brand that includes fluoride in its product.
  • Don't use alcohol or tobacco.
  • Eat a clean, healthy diet free of starchy and sugary foods.
  • Speak with your dentist about the early signs of gum disease. If you notice the signs in your own mouth, contact Prime Health Dental for an appointment.

On 'The Pitt,' McFarland's Laëtitia Hollard channels 'Midwest nice'

When Laëtitia Hollard walked onto the Warner Bros. lot for her first day on HBO Max’s “The Pitt,” she was fresh out of Juilliard, still processing how a kid from McFarland had landed on an Emmy Award-winning medical drama.

Hollard, who had been a fan of the show, suddenly found herself learning how to do CPR and EKGs alongside the cast.

“I was very, very shy,” Hollard said, “but they were constantly like ‘Hey, welcome. You’re one of us now.’”

Hollard said she felt “very protected” on set when fellow castmate Taylor Dearden, who plays Dr. Melissa King on the show, made sure the cast and crew pronounced Hollard’s name correctly — not “luh-tee-sha” but “lit-tee-see-ya.”

Before Juilliard, Hollard performed in several productions with Children’s Theater of Madison and Capital City Theatre. In 2019, she played Macduff’s child in the American Players Theatre production of “Macbeth.”

Raised in McFarland with French and Guadeloupean roots, Hollard makes a point to ensure that her identities are visible and represented in her work. She wore a dress by Guadeloupean designer Denis Devaed to the “Pitt” Season 2 premiere in January. And she brings Midwest mannerisms to her character, Emma Nolan, on the show.

Now, several weeks into the series’ second season, Hollard says that the reality of starring on the show has begun to sink in as audiences react, reviews roll in and her face appears on thousands of screens across the globe.

Hollard spoke to the Cap Times about growing up in McFarland, finding purpose beyond personal success, channeling her Midwest experiences into her “Pitt” character and what it means to be seen — and help others feel seen — on one of television’s biggest stages.

Episodes of “The Pitt” drop each Thursday on HBO Max. This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

Season 2 of “The Pitt” came out this January. How does it feel?

There was a lot happening. At first I was like “OK, my family is excited.” Now, when the episodes are coming out and I’m seeing people react and I’m seeing all these great reviews about the show, it feels surreal.

People from my hometown, McFarland, are like “shout out to you for realizing your dream.” I never thought about acting as a dream. I would have been happy doing regional theater. Now that I am in (this) position, I realized “Oh my gosh, I did have a dream.” I just never allowed myself to name it because it felt so out of reach when I was in Wisconsin.

Now that you can name it a dream, how has it evolved?

When I first started acting it was something that was for me. I was the boisterous kid in the halls. Because I’m Caribbean, I would always be dancing and telling stories. Grace Nelson, a friend of mine, was like “You should just be on a stage.” When I was on a stage, everything made sense. I could sing and instead of being told to shut up, I was applauded.

For a while I was like “I love this for me, but I can’t do this as a career because it’s just for me and I want to do something that’s helping other people.” Then I did “Lines” with Theatre LILA. It was my first professional play (and) it was with all these women of color, only women of color.

I realized in that process that I could fully be myself, not this whitewashed version of me that I was trying to be when I was in McFarland. Through this work that had transformed me, I could also transform audiences. There were people in that audience — young women of color — who were crying because they were like “Oh, I can finally speak up for myself.” I realized I wanted to be an actor because it can change people.

(“The Pitt”) does both at the same time — having that HBO excellence but also having that true impact on audiences. I saw an article that people became organ donors after watching Season 1. Healthcare professionals are feeling seen and people are realizing that we need to give them more resources.

Right now, nurses are striking in New York. We need to protect nurses. … I am doing this to give voices to people who aren’t always heard, not only for the success of getting that check.

What is it like to be a person that others see themselves in now?

I think it’s a lot. I carry a lot of identities. I’m French, Guadeloupean, I’m from McFarland, Wisconsin. The thing I love about all the places I come from is that we’re all small town people, we’re all hard workers. They’re strong communities.

To see the support that comes from Madison and my McFarland people … my parents are being treated like kings right now. All the neighbors are being so sweet and that’s not something I feel like you can really get from a city.

Can you paint me a picture of your journey from McFarland to “The Pitt?”

I had a lot of help. Emma in the show is like high school me from McFarland. She is from upper Michigan. I’m from the northern Midwest. I understand small town culture.

I think the journey I had was truly being a person who was in a town that wasn’t meant for that person. Being mixed in McFarland … I love my town but it wasn’t the best experience. There were many times I felt different and had to make sense of my situation, make sense of why I belonged to places. That introspection made me a better actor.

What is something you want people to understand about Emma Nolan on “The Pitt”?

My goal in Emma was to have someone who resembled that upper Midwest nice. In New York we’re not smiling like we do in Wisconsin. I learned not to smile as often. I see comments about Emma and they’re like “Oh my God, she’s such a smiley girl.” I’m like, “If you’re from Wisconsin, you’re smiling.”

So I just tried to bring as much of Wisconsin with me as possible into this role. I hope that people can see that culture within her, not only that nice and trying to make people happy, but that hard worker, and realize that there is more to her than meets the eye.

I feel very proud to be a Wisconsinite and hope that readers will tune into the show and see that Wisconsin representation, even though I’m playing a Michigander. I hope that they see their daughters in Emma. I hope they see their sisters and past versions of themselves in her.

So much of her is an ode to Wisconsin and I hope they stick through the end and see what happens to her. There’s more to come and see how strong of a person she is and how strong Wisconsinites are.

What’s next for Laëtitia Hollard?

I’m back on the grind. I would love to keep working in film and TV. I named this as something I wanted to do while I was at Juilliard. I was like I would really love to do hour-long drama episodes with HBO, which is crazy.

I would love to work in a film that is grounded and dramatic, with directors like Barry Jenkins and Damien Chazelle … (they are) two directors I really love. But yeah, I’m back on the grind.
